They saw Him only as a carpenter

Gospel Reading

Mark 6:1–6

Jesus, You return to Your own town, not with spectacle but with familiarity. You walk among those who know Your name, Your family, Your ordinary beginnings. And yet, it is precisely this closeness that becomes a barrier. They cannot receive what feels too near, too human, too familiar. You stand before them, Wisdom itself, and still You are questioned, seen only as a carpenter.

In this Gospel, I recognize the quiet danger of daily life: how easily I can domesticate You. How often I expect You to act elsewhere, in grand places, through extraordinary people—but hesitate to believe You are at work here, in my routines, my small obediences, my ordinary days. Like them, I can hear Your words yet resist their weight, not because they are difficult, but because they come from You who walk so closely beside me.

And still, You do not force belief. You marvel and grieve, You move on—continuing to teach, to heal where hearts remain open. This tells me that faith is not noise or certainty, but a humble readiness to receive You as You choose to come.

Prayer:  Jesus, heal my blindness to Your presence in the familiar, and teach me to trust that You are already at work here, with me.
